Borrowed Grandmothers
- February 2, 2012
by Cindy Kleyn-Kennedy

La Casita recently held a very special birthday breakfast celebration. Juanita Chavez, “foster grandmother” turned eighty years old last week, and Principal Sylvia Martinez, along with all the staff at La Casita, decided it was definitely worth making a fuss about.

Juanita, whose own six children reside in diverse locations - from Texas, Washington, California, Connecticut, to Mexico - is originally from Corpus Christi, Texas. She works as a foster grandparent at La Casita Elementary through the Foster Grandparent program (https://mylocalgov.com/currycountynm/WebDept.asp?key=36) and loves it: “My favorite thing to do is to read with the kids, in both English and Spanish. Everyone treats me so well, like being surprised by the birthday breakfast; they made me cry! It takes a lot of energy to keep up with elementary kids,” Juanita continued, “but if you sit around doing nothing, that’s how you grow old.”

Clovis Municipal Schools Implements Skylert Notification System

Clovis Municipal Schools announces the district's implementation of Skylert Calling System, a module of the district's Student Information Management System. Skylert will enable the district to have increased contact options with parents/guardians via phone, email, and text message. The school district intends to use Skylert to notify parents/guardians of time sensitive information. Examples of system uses include student absences, low Child Nutrition account balances, and information of an urgent or time sensitive matter such as a school closure or delay.
