Mental Health
Each
staff member of the Student Support Services department
is fully trained in the provision of mental health services.
Most have years of experience as mental health providers
in settings outside of the schools. Many of our personnel
are licensed as school psychologists, social workers
or as professional counselors by an agency of the State
of New Mexico. The coordinator of the department is
a fully trained and licensed clinical psychologist who
holds a doctorate in clinical psychology.
School social workers, counselors and psychologists provide
help to students who have qualified for Special Education services
for behavioral and/or emotional problems. In these cases, we
provide one or more of the following:
- Counseling - Individual and/or group counseling
- Family Conferences - Meetings to discuss parenting issues/concerns
- Consultation - Meetings with the student's teacher(s)
to assist them in working with the student's behavioral
or emotional problems
- Interagency Coordination - Communication with other agencies
to help the student and to allow follow up to assure that
services are continuing.
- Crisis Intervention - When a student is a danger to them
self or others or is out of control, the School Psychologist,
counselor or Social Worker will aid in resolving the situation
or will find help for the student.
- Behavior management assistance – Behavior Aides
are assigned some students whose behavior is disruptive
to the educational environment and who need close adult
guidance to modify their behavior.
